The trio gets together just to toss-up the song that Mayor Thao insists on repeating even though it’s not true.

First, the Oakland A’s never once said that all of the buildings in the Howard Terminal Concept Drawing had to be built at once. Also, anyone with a tiny bit of development knowledge let alone actually read the consultant reports on Howard Terminal, knows that the land parcels were to be sold to other developers and Dave Kaval said to me in an interview two years ago that the A’s welcomed the development partners. But the City of Oakland never bothered to try and find any.

So the real question is why didn’t the City of Oakland form the tax increment financing zone that was promised. Neither Damon Bruce or Damon Amendolara know the Howard Terminal saga well enough to bother to ask the question. Moreover, it’s the one to ask because the A’s had already followed Mayor League Baseball’s directive and started the move to Las Vegas in late 2021.

That was before Sheng became Mayor, but as Mayor of Oakland in late 2022, rather than go after another baseball team, she took up the apparent idea that she could use the A’s to fake news them into reversing their plans.

Fooled the fans, but not the A’s. The Oakland A’s had enough. They were gone. Any talks were out of courtesy, just to see if the City had gotten its act together. The answer was no. Under Sheng, the City of Oakland was more political than ever, and even threatened to take a vote on the entire Howard Terminal project in the middle of the development process!

The Mayor of Oakland Sheng Thao also says the A’s were moving the goal posts and coming up with new, higher, cost demands. Well, a page 52 of a 2023 City document called Waterfront Ballpark District IFP Draft produced by Century Urban reports the truth:

Off-Site Public Infrastructure. The City estimates that the Off-Site Public Infrastructure will cost approximately $482 million (in 2023 dollars). The City anticipates commencing construction of the Off-Site Public Infrastructure in 2026, and is assuming that the $482 million cost in 2023 dollars will grow by 6% in each of calendar years 2023, 2024 and 2025, resulting in total costs of $573.5 million in 2026 dollars. The City has identified the following capital sources to pay for Off-Site
Public Infrastructure:

Note, the little known to the public Century Urban document shows not only that the City of Oakland came up with the Off-Site Public Infrastructure cost at $4.2 billion, but that the City of Oakland also released the subsidy number for the project: $1.8 billion. But clearly they did not tell the A’s by that point, because the draft report was dated April 2023 – a full two years after the A’s made the decision to go to Las Vegas because the City of Oakland was slow-poking around with establishing the tax increment financing zone.

So, the Mayor of Oakland is clearly not telling the truth, and Damon Bruce and Damon Amendolara don’t care to ask for it. Once again, Oakland A’s fans have been taken for a ride.
